16 Horsepower - 16HPDVD review

by Marco van Ravenhorst
from Dutch magazine Plato Mania, issue 202, 22 April 2005

On the same day this DVD hit the doormat, it was announced that Sixteen Horsepower no longer exists and so unfortunately we have to view 16HP as a farewell-document. This double DVD contains videos, live footage, surround versions without images of a number of songs, interviews and interesting archive footage. Compiled with care, but sometimes rather sloppy. For instance the information on the box for the two discs has been mixed-up accidentally and videos and live recordings are jumbled up, though that isn't a problem in itself.

Amongst the live songs we find intense and never before released versions of Joy Division's Heart And Soul and Twenty Four Hours, and the videos contain a lot of beautiful black and white images of the American countryside (HAW!) that reinforce the desolate atmosphere of the music impressively. Of the interviews the one by Paul Epsen [sic] with David Eugene Edwards is especially interesting.

Personally I would have preferred a complete concert, but maybe that's something for the future. If 16HP makes one thing clear it is that it is very sad that one of the best and most original bands of the last ten years is now past tense. Fortunately we still have Woven Hand and Lilium.
