Music In Mind festival
This was the first solo concert of David Eugene Edwards in Belgium. The huge auditorium of the Bruges Concertgebouw was probably not the most suitable location for this intimate gig, but nevertheless it became a pleasant evening.
David started off with the grand Outlaw Song, his version of an old Hungarian traditional, which his good friend Peter Eri (Muzsikás) had provided him with. After Sparrow Falls (the first track on his brand new Woven Hand album) it became clear that 'The Singing Preacher' was in good form. His voice sounded tremendously pure and passionate
With the words “she's 120 years old … she doesn't like to leave home”, David explained why he didn't manage to tune his mandolin. One could guess that his banjo remained absent because of the same reason. A strange deficiency, because I couldn't recall that I had ever seen David not playing the banjo in one of his concerts.
The conspicuous sample in Chest Of Drawers -“That's morning prayers in Bagdad… IT IS”, told David the surprised audience - proved that the war in Iraq is a sore subject. Whether this means that David will bring out more politically engaged work, we have to await.
The highlight of the evening was without any doubt an experimental version of Tin Finger. David forced the audience/his flock to behold what the Lord wanted to show them: ”Look!…Look!!…Look!!!…Look!!!!… He bares his arms”, he snarled. It seemed as if he wanted to tear out his own eyes to give them to the blind. What an image(ry)!
The biggest part of the audience was amused by it, probably unaware of the fact that David was deadly serious. I doubt that his mission to convert people to Christianity bears any fruit. Many look upon this talented artist as a weirdo who got the idea of singing about the Lord, our Father.
After one 'encore' David Eugene, clearly tired, ended his gig with a sigh.
Next week the Woven Hand tour (only with David and drummer Ordy Garrison) to promote the new album starts off. Don't miss it!
