Thank You For Clapping

Loppen, Copenhagen (DK), 30 April 2002

Woven Hand

It is almost impossible to imagine a place that is more fitting for an appearance of a David E. Edwards band. Loppen can be found in the Freetown of Christiana: an isolated community of squatters and other alternative individuals. A special location for a show.

Loppen is an old edifice, and the section where the show took place looks like an old barn, with dark wooden beams against the ceiling and stable windows in the walls. The stage is a mere 30 centimetres high and situated in the middle of the longest side of the room. This has the advantage that the band is semi-surrounded by the audience, which creates an intimate atmosphere.

After the opening act Pluto had left the stage, it was Woven Hand's turn. Although the gig was not completely sold-out, the room had filled decently in the meantime. The crowd was somewhat noisier than at the shows in say Brussels and Tilburg, but this didn't divert the attention away from the music.

The sound hadn't been adjusted very well, which meant that the drums sometimes came to the fore too prominent and David's vocals couldn't be heard properly every now and then. Daniel McMahon's vocals were inaudible (as during most shows on this tour for that matter). Besides that, the performance was good and solid, and the bandmembers seemed very well at ease. This was still noticeable after the show when they hung out in the hall and were approachable.
