Woven Hand - Consider The Birds review

Letting off steam devoutly

by by Peter Bruyn
from Dutch magazine Aloha, annual volume 6, issue 8, November 2004

So Woven Hand is that 'other project' of David Eugene Edwards, that god-fearing and Satan-defying songwriter from Denver, Colorado. With 16 Horsepower he became world-famous in The Netherlands and neighbouring parishes like Germany, Belgium and Denmark. But because the inspiration from above proofed to be too comprehensive for just that trio, Edwards lets off steam solo - assisted by a musical friend here and there - in Woven Hand. Even more devout than 16 Horsepower, in fits and starts at least as possessed, but at the same time the level is less constant. Some songs (Chest of Drawers) are divinely beautiful. Others float past almost anonymous. But the conclusion that the audience can do with a few less David Eugene Edwards records is of course wholly misplaced. For he makes them in the first place for Him, up there.
