Woven Hand - Consider The Birds review

by Marco van Ravenhorst
from Dutch publication Platomania, issue 195, 18 September 2004

The why and wherefore of this second proper Wovenhand (yes, now as one word) album are not quite clear to me, because as far as the sound is concerned it is very much a continuation of the latest Sixteen Horsepower album, Folklore. So why isn't this just the new Sixteen Horsepower record? All instruments on more than half of the songs are played by David Eugene Edwards, on the other songs he is assisted by a number of others. That he knows his way around percussion pretty well is evident from the brooding To Make A Ring. That atmosphere, for that matter, is characteristic of the entire record. Ominous, but often also stilly, like in the beautiful Oil On Panel. The surprise of the first three Sixteen Horsepower albums has meanwhile faded away, but Consider The Birds is, qualitatively speaking, a lot better than the first Woven Hand album or Folklore. Timeless music to be cherished for a very long time.
