Woven Hand - Consider The Birds review

Purgatory after the sermon

by hub
from Austrian newspaper Die Presse, 25 September 2004

David Eugene Edwards, frontman of 16 Horsepower, the intense country-preachers, also confronts the dark yet beguiling embodiment of classic folk-desperation with his second project Woven Hand: the temptations of evil, human weakness, guilt and atonement.

In the exuberant (by comparison) instrumentation Edwards fans an Old Testament purgatory, which sometimes definitely reminds you of the early Nick Cave. On the other hand he also grants himself subdued sacral meditations, like for instance in the oblique closing-ballad "In the Piano". Essential food for the soul while waiting for the next 16 Horsepower album.
