Thank You For Clapping

Whereas Tivoli and De Oosterpoort had been seated venues and cold. The Burgerweeshuis lacked chairs and was agreeable warm. Is that why David Eugene Edwards was hatless tonight? ;-) Anyway, the show was warm too. As intimate as the small venue in picturesque Deventer. But here too there were a few over-serious people. When some people started to clap along, in time and during a clap-along-song, they got stop-that-you-philistine-looks. Why, you wonder.

David was in very good voice tonight. Pretty is not an adjective usually used when his singing is described. But a times it was just that. And of course there are always people (there is one amongst us) who think that he shouldn't sing pretty but gritty. :-) Well, you can't win 'em all. Tonight it certainly won one of us over, hands down.

The Groningen show was in a proper theatre and people behaved accordingly. Meaning they were as quiet as a mouse and "too reverential". Almost to the point that it stifled the atmosphere. At the Burgerweeshuis, it being a club, affairs were less formal and people not so quiet. Though not annoying, at least according to us. But D.E.E. probably found it galling. When he came back alone for the solo bit of the encore, he asked if "You guys get it all talked out back there? You got it all settled?" He then settled to work on an-almost-fifteen-minutes-long version of Golden Rope slash Black Soul Choir slash Phyllis Ann. One of the highlights of the evening. As was a dramatic version of Chest of Drawers. Or does that simply mean that we have gotten used to the new arrangement? Your Russia and Phyllis Ann were other highlights. Though perhaps "technically" not as good as Groningen, this was more enjoyable.
