Thank You For Clapping

Temple Bar Music Centre,
Dublin (IRE), 13 September 2002

Clearly 16 Horsepower isn't big in Eire yet. The Temple Bar Music Centre is a rather new venue with a capacity of about 700, but a mere 200 people managed to find their way to the gig.

Upon entering the hall we immediately heard, much to our bewilderment, plain Dutch. As it seems to behove proper (?) Dutchmen abroad, this party too let themselves be heard frequently and boisterously during the show. It was evident soon that they were not really familiar with 16 Horsepower's repertoire, witness the very clever remark: "my, these songs do end very abruptly indeed." Thank goodness we made contact with two very devoted Scottish fans that had taking the trouble to travel from Glasgow to Dublin. Perhaps 16hp should play Scotland more often!

The opening act, Conway Savage again, got more feedback then in The Netherlands, even though he had to bridge 7 meters to reach his listeners. At the beginning of 16hp's show the audience kept that same distance, but after one sheep had moved closer to the stage, the others followed.

Like the night before in Galway, the band played passionately and came up with a convincing concert. Towards the end of the tour, the band had gotten used to each other's musical ways, thereby it was now possible to put more feeling into the show. Although hindered again by technical difficulties, the show did not slow down.

The banjo did fail a number of times forcing David Eugene Edwards to perform a semi a-capella rendition of Single Girl together with Daniel McMahon. Like the night before in Galway, David seemed very ill at ease without his instrument. Nevertheless this was the strongest version of Single Girl compared to earlier performances. It was followed by a solo version of Heel On The Shovel on guitar.

Like the night before in Galway, David unfortunately broke a string during this show, which meant that Clogger was played without slide-guitar almost completely. John Rumley did his best to make up for the deficiency by also playing David's parts. Pascal Humbert was inimitable; comme d'habitude Pascal jouait très fantastique tout le concert!

The usual encore this time, but what happened with Horse Head Fiddle? What a shame that it wasn't played anymore.
