16 Horsepower - Folklore review

by Thierry Supervielle
from French magazine Crossroads, July/August 2002.

David Eugene Edwards and «his» Sixteen Horsepower (yes, I know, there are also Jean-Yves and Pascal, etc etc... Nonetheless, the mesmeric David Eugene Edwards remains the black soul in chief of this creepy band) have been haunting our dreams for 10 years already, that's unbelievable! Their music gets darker and darker, more and more mysterious as albums follow each other (3 studio records, a live album, a re-released EP and a solo project for David Eugene... not that bad!), and if you don't take your good old Crossroads men's words for granted any longer, just play «Blessed persistence» and «Beyond the pale» (which doesn't have anything to do with The Mission) 3 times in a row...

Well, for sure, Folklore won't cheer you up if you've been a bit low lately, but what a blow, what a deliciously dark, mysterious craftmanship (a mere banjo will never scare you that much!) : no wonder David Eugene Edwards quotes, as his main influences, artists or bands as tormented as Johnny Cash, Joy Division, Jeffrey Lee Pierce and the unforgettable Gun Club of course, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, along with the Hungarian band Musziskas. (a great tip to sound like a smartass in parties) (and yet he forgot to mention Robert Johnson and Hank Williams) 16hp: an evil band [sic] that still has many a primal fear to stir...
