Thank You For Clapping

Oosterpoort, Groningen (NL), 26 November 2004

What a difference with Utrecht! Well, it was cold up North too, but let's not talk about the temperature. It was a focussed, strong performance. David Eugene Edwards and Ordy Garrison were now clearly a "slick outfit". It shows what a little practice can do. ;-) One song flowed smoothly into the next with Ordy as the linking pin. He was the star of the show. With his bells, eggs, bowls, his pants (which he used as percussion too) and what-have-you: And drums of course. With a special mention for his cute miniature cymbal. Because songs became one, people didn't know when or if to applaud and therefore didn't. So when David said Thank You For Clapping that was rather ironic. At least that is how we perceived it.

Down In Yon Forrest went on and on, clocking in at 10 minutes. Compared to previous tours it had undergone a Hulk-like transformation. Not that is was green. But very powerful. It was now an all-out rock-song. With hints of what was once called progressive rock. And blues too. It had a definite 70s feel to it.

The evening was rather heavy on hand. A bit too serious for one drunk who entered the venue late. He mockingly (or enthusiastically?) started to drum along with Ordy on a railing during one of the "links". That was not received gratefully by some audience members who immediately told him to fuck off. Yes, those were the words used. At times like that you wish people (other people of course :-) would have some sense of humour.

It was nice to hear Golden Rope again. D.E.E. blew the dust of the mandolin before playing it. Golden Rope sequenced into quite a few other songs. He must quite like his line about a broken door handle because it surfaced for the third time tonight. Perhaps he has to fix one at home? Blue Pail Fever was a worthy way to end a memorable evening.
