17-11-2007:
After working for 7 years intensively on the 16horsepower.com website, we finally reached a decision after months of silence. Unfortunately, time which you seem to need more when you get older, is sparse. So, we decided to stop with the website and continue with a light version at wovenhand.com.

Basically we'd like to keep the tyfc-site up for reference and the Saloon running for fans. You can keep informing each other about anything related to the band.
Yet from us no more tourtrails, stills, broadcasting news, mp3's, ... Woven Hand lite will only contain tourdates (some 2008 dates just added), discography and important news.

Even though we are not fully out of your picture, we look back on a really fun experience while meeting great people. Therefore we'd like to thank of course 16 Horsepower, the brethren and friends: photographers, translators, writers and searchers. Thank you for kindly sharing your talents. Don't waste them. ;-)

  • And if you are going to miss the pictures and reviews, please visit a Woven Hand fan at wovenhand.info who is taking over where we are leaving off ... .

The first CD of the digipack features the live version of Woven Hand's Elktooth. And as bonus material you can find The Speaking Hands on the DVD. For more details about the other artists and snapshots of Woven Hand, go to the discography page. To order, you can simply visit the TTF Rudolstadt online shop.

    17-12-2006:
  • DeVotchka, who played a couple of shows supporting the Dresden Dolls in Europe, will be celebrating New Year on stage. David Eugene Edwards has been invited to perform a solo set on the 30th of December. This event will be held at the Ogden Theatre, Denver (Co), USA. However, his better half, Ordy Garrison will be celebrating the year-end as a good tradition with Slim Cessna's New Year shows at the Bluebird. So what to choose? Easy, the Auto Club will also raise hell on the 31st of December at the Bluebird, Denver (Co), USA. Problem solved! Plus they throw in an extra Munly & The Lee Lewis Harlots.

    07-11-2006:
  • Woven Hand's first-ever Russian show will not be at the Moscow Apelsin club, but at Club Na Brestskoy, or Brest Club, on Brestskaya street in the Russian capital. The 9 December gig starts at 22.00.

    07-10-2006:
  • The score of the Ultima Vez production PUUR which had been available from Ultima Vez, is now available from Glitterhouse. It's a mail-order only release, just like the previous Woven Hand - Ultima Vez collaboration Blush.

  • 21-09-2006:
  • Mt. Scopus Radio is a station operated entirely by students of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. On Thursday 28 September, Mt. Scopus Radio will broadcast a 2-hour special about David Eugene Edwards and his music. Including a phone(d) interview with DEE. The show starts at 23.00 Isreal time, 22.00 CET and 16.00 Eastern Time, to mention just a few time zones. You can listen to Mt. Scope Radio using Winmp.

  • 26-08-2006:
  • My Russia, Your Russia. Woven Hand's first ever show in Russia. On 9 December 2006 at the Apelsin club on Malaya Gruzinskaya Ulitsa #15 in Moscow.

  • 19-08-2006:
  • A show has been added to the European tour. That tour will now start in Switzerland. At the Lucerne/Luzern BOA Kulturzentrum on 15 November.

Changes in the US tour supporting Serena Maneesh. The Philadelphia show on 5 October will be at First Unitarian Church, not the TLA (Theatre of Living Arts). The New York show the following day at the Warsaw seems to be in doubt...

  • 06-08-2006:

(Click here for links to all the venues on this tour)

Denver is also on Serena Maneesh' itinerary. The band is scheduled to play the Larimer Lounge on 26 September. But Edwards seems to skip that one. Frankly speaking we had never heard of Serena Maneesh until now. The link between Serena Maneesh and Woven Hand could be Sounds Familyre. Serena Maneesh has worked with Sufjan Stevens and Daniel Smith of the Danielson Famile. And on the subject of Sounds Familyre. That label will release Mosaic in the States on 12 September.

  • 30-07-2006:
  • Since March it had been uncertain whether a DVD with Woven Hand's show at the Bonn Harmonie (18-10-05) would be released. Well it won't. David Eugene Edwards has decided that the Rockpalast show does not represent Woven Hand as he wants to see Woven Hand represented so there won't be a DVD from this show. However, Edwards is planning to put a DVD together with a film-maker friend, but that's about all we can tell you about that project right now. Ultima Vez is about to release a luxury 3-DVD set of their ballets, including "Blush". The set should be available through Glitterhouse from mid September on at the latest.

  • 24-06-2006:
  • Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots finished top of the 2006 Denver Post "Colorado’s best underground bands" poll. As voted for by local music-experts and selected citizens, Woven Hand reached the number 10 spot and Lilium ended up 115th. Here's the top 10: The first six columns show the placings in the previous polls. 2001, when 16hp won, was the first year this election took place.

From the Denver Post (21-07-06): Our panel speaks: "Woven Hand is the somber exponent of Denver's gothic country scene. Its sound is at once creepy and redemptive, with tones and lyrics capturing the existential side of spirituality. With raw styling and captivating stage presence, Woven Hand turns a 40-minute set into fired conversion gathering."

  • 18-07-2006:

There's a European tour scheduled for July and the first show has been announced. Woven Hand will play the Quart Festival in Kristiansand, Norway on Friday, 7 July 2006.

  • 11-03-2006:
  • Belgian venue Stuk (in Leuven/Louvain) organises a festival called Vadermoord (Parricide) during which artists pay tribute to acts they admire by covering/murdering their model's songs. On 28 March 2006, Belgian band Stash will play a set of 16 Horsepower songs. Later that evening The Scabs' Guy Swinnen will cover Neil Young songs (even though The Scabs sounded like The Clash).

  • 02-03-2006:
  • On Friday 31 March 2006, at the Colorado Christian University Event Center, you can hear orators talking about the "Sacred and Secular" and "How should Christians engage culture?" A performance by Woven Hand is also on the bill. The programme starts at 18.30 and lasts till 21.00. The CCU campus is located at 8787 W. Alameda Ave. in Lakewood, Colorado.

  • 28-02-2006:
  • Since April 2005, Woven Hand has been touring as a three-piece when Peter van Laerhoven joined David Eugene Edwards and Ordy Garrison. The Woven Hand line-up has now been expanded to four and the new member is none other than … Pascal Humbert! It will be nice to see him back in “live action”. The recordings for the new Woven Hand album are almost finished. The album is tentatively titled "Mosaic" and Glitterhouse hopes to release it in late May or June, before Woven Hand does a few summer festival dates in Europe.
  • The Woven Hand DVD is roughly scheduled for late fall of this year, (note 07-03-06 in italics) if it is released, which isn't certain at the moment. Should it be released the DVD will contain the full concert and a 15-minute interview with Edwards. Whereas the Rockpalast broadcasts don't show the entire gig and complete conversation between Edwards and Glitterhouse's Rembert Stiewe.

  • Back to Pascal Humbert. And Jean-Yves Tola. They are working on a new Lilium album, which probably will be out in the second half of this year.

  • 01-02-2006:
  • Searching For The Wrong-Eyed Jesus is out on DVD. It was released on 30 January by Plexi, a British independent DVD label and distributor. Compared with the movie you may have seen in the cinema or on VPRO or BBC tv, the DVD has 28 minutes of extras including two 16 Horsepower songs. My Narrow Mind and Poor Mouth. The DVD (catalog number 801)) is available from Plexi for £17.99. The DVD will be released in North America by Image Entertainment on 14 March 2006. And speaking about stateside releases. 16 Horsepower's LIVE DVD will be released by Alternative Tentacles this April.

  • 25-01-2006:
  • Woven Hand's provisional and sketchy European touring plans for this year are: a two-week festival tour in the summer and a club and theatre tour in the fall.

  • 19-01-2006:
  • Another showing of Searching For The Wrong-Eyed Jesus. Tuesday 24 January: 0.20 - 1.45 AM, CET on BBC2. Local British viewers have to tune in at 23.20 on Monday 23 January.

And this is how the BBC advertises the film: "A thought-provoking road trip into the heart of the poor white American South. Alt Country singer Jim White takes his white-trash 1970 Chevy Impala through a gritty terrain of churches, prisons, truckstops, biker bars and coalmines. Along the way are roadside encounters wtih present-day musical mavericks the Handsome Family, David Johansen, David Eugene of 16 Horsepower, old-time banjo player, Lee Sexton - and grisly stories from the cult Southern novelist Harry Crews." Let's hope that this time the movie will not be interrupted by self-absorbed activist tv makers like happened when VPRO TV broadcasted the film last month.

  • 07-01-2006:
  • Back to Bonn and the Harmonie/Rockpalast Crossroads concert. German Satellite TV station 3sat will broadcast a part of that show on 8 January 2006 between 2.25 and 3.10 AM. "An Intensität ist das Trio Woven Hand schwerlich zu überbieten. Die Musik, die unter der Leitung von David Eugene Edwards entsteht, ist essenziell: Hie und da ein Unheil verkündendes Banjo und stets die mahnende Gitarre - doch dazugesellen sich auch ruhige und kontemplative Momente."

  • 12-12-2005:
  • Peter van Laerhoven has composed the score for a new Belgian feature film “Een Ander Zijn Geluk” (Someone Else's Happiness). David Eugene Edwards wrote the title track's lyrics, and sang them. The movie, which was directed by Fien Troch, premiered on 17 October 2005 during the Filmfestival van Vlaanderen in Gent and went into 'regular circulation' on 7 December. Een Ander Zijn Geluk is currently playing in cinemas in Flanders and Brussels. You can hear a fragment of the title track on the movie's website when you watch the trailer.

  • 02-12-2005:
  • This weekend Dutch TV-station VPRO will broadcast Searching For The Wrong-Eyed Jesus, the 2005 documentary by Andrew Douglas about the deep south which also features David Eugene Edwards. The VPRO site says the movie will be shown on Saturday, 3 December. The VPRO TV-guide says the movie will be shown on Sunday, 4 December. They do agree on time and station. 23.05 CET on Nederland 3. Our money is on Sunday.

  • 17-11-2005:
  • Tonight Tracks, the popular music programme of German/French TV-channel Arte, features items about 22 Pistepirkko, Dee Dee Bridgewater, podcasting, The Hype, a German Elvis impersonator and about "Punks going Country." And the latter item is about (the biography of) three banjo-players. William Elliott Whitmore, Sons Of Jim Wayne and David Eugene Edwards. Tracks is on later today at 23.30 CET.

  • An update of the 20-10-05 news. 3sat will broadcast a part of the Bonn Harmonie show on 8 January 2006. Between 2.45 and 3.30 AM.
  • The (European) release date of the 16hp double-DVD Live has been postponed by Glitterhouse until 2 December. The initial pressing (limited edition) of the DVD set will come in a special packaging.

"Contains great live performances and rare off-stage footage to give a real sense of what Sixteen Horsepower stood for as a live band. The beautiful registration by the RTBF of the 2002 concert at 'Le Cirque Royal' - Belgium on disc 1. On disc 2 a compilation of different documents: the 1996 Rockpalast show in Germany, a rehearsal in David's hometown Denver, an impression of the last US-tour in 2004, ... and finally an unique souvenir of what would turn out to be their last concert ever, July 17th 2004, Antwerp, Belgium."

  • 26-10-2005:
  • Calexico and Iron & Wine are touring their joint EP "In The Reigns." Tonight they are playing the Denver Fillmore Auditorium. Today KVCU, Boulder's Radio 1190, announced that Woven Hand will be the surprise opening act. Well, there goes that surprise. But there may be another one. Calexico and Iron & Wine each play their own sets, then a mutual one during which they welcome a special guest on stage from the city they are visiting. And rumour has it that David Eugene Edwards will be that mystery guest. The show starts at 7.30 PM. Be there and be surprised or not.

  • 20-10-2005:
  • The day before yesterday Woven Hand played the Bonn Harmonie in front of the Rockpalast cameras. The entire set will be broadcast on German television station 3sat, on or around 6 January 2006. Only the highlights will be shown on WDR on 21 November 2005. (See the 16-09-05 entry)

  • 15-10-2005:
  • Glitterhouse will release another double 16 Horsepower DVD and a single Woven Hand one. The as yet untitled 16hp DVD-set should be in the stores on 25 November. It isn't 100% clear right now what material it will contain but this is said to be on it: a Rockpalast show (probably the 1996 Essen gig), Pinkpop 2000, Brussels Cirque Royal/Koninklijk Circus 2002, footage from shows in Antwerp 2004 and Utrecht plus material from the VPRO-archives.

The also yet untitled Woven Hand DVD is still to be shot. It will be centred round next Tuesday’s Rockpalast Crossroads show in Bonn. Besides the performance the disc will contain an interview and other bonus material. The release date is still to be announced.

  • 23-09-2005:
  • David Eugene Edwards will visit Portugal for the second time in a short period. On 30 September Woven Hand will play in Santa Maria da Feira (near the city of Porto) at the Festival para Gente Sentada. The other acts on the bill that day are Damien Jurado and Old Jerusalém. The festival is held at the Cine-Teatro António Lamoso. Tickets are €15,- and can be purchased at Fnac.

  • 16-09-2005:
  • Technically it's on a Monday but let's call it the night from Sunday to Monday. On 21 November from 1.00 - 3.30 a.m. on German TV station WDR, Rockpalast will broadcast live footage from the Crossroads shows at the Bonn Harmonie. The transmission features among others Paul Carrack, Roachford, Gus Black, Omar & The Howlers and Woven Hand. Woven Hand plays at the Harmonie on 18 October. And David Eugene Edwards will be interviewed for Rockpalast. Don't forget: you have up to and including 21 September to mail your questions to tyfc@16horsepower.com. (See the 26-08-05 entry).
  • Tarantella is about to release its first album, on Alternative Tentacles. The CD release show is in Denver on 4 November, at Bender's Tavern. Other related shows at that venue this month: Munly and The Lee Lewis Harlots (supporting The Legendary Shack Shakers) on 25 September and The Denver Gentlemen (supporting Barbez) on 28 September. Another usual suspect, Slim Cessna's Autoclub plays Denver's Lion's Lair tonight and tomorrow. And the Autoclub have a double header this Sunday with an afternoon show also in Denver at the Larimer Lounge and an evening show some 60 miles north at the Aggie Theatre in Ft. Collins, CO. Who says Denver is boring?

  • 08-09-2005:
  • As you might have seen on the schedule, Ultima Vez will perform Puur at the Flemish Opera in Ghent, Belgium from 27 until 29 September 2005 as part of the 'Festival van Vlaanderen' (Flanders Festival). What has just been confirmed as part of the festival, is that Woven Hand will continue the evenings of the 27th and 28th with a unique Woven Hand concert, presenting a selection of the music David Eugene Edwards has written for Ultima Vez dance productions. The shows will be held at the Vooruit, 140m South-East of the Vlaamse Opera. If you can find it, you have free entrance with the ticket of the dance performance.

Concert tickets also available through the Festival van Vlaanderen and Vooruit. Ultima Vez will start its performance at 20:00 - Woven Hand at 23:00.

  • 01-09-2005:
  • A follow-up (May 6) from Ultima Vez: "After its world première in Singapore and performances in Seoul, Kuopio, Salzburg and Avignon, Ultima Vez will open the new season with the Belgian première of Puur. From September 7 until 10 Puur will be presented at the KVSBOX in Brussels. KVS will also revive Puur at the renovated KVSBOL from April 13th until 21st 2006.

For his latest creation Wim Vandekeybus works with an international cast of 13 performers amongst whom the 79-year old Flemish actor, director and playwright Tone Brulin. With text by the Duth author P.F. Thomése (Southland, Shadow Child ...) and music by David Eugene Edwards (Woven Hand, 16 Horsepower) & the Italian composer Fausto Romitelli by the contemporary music ensemble Ictus.

Contemporary myth or fantasy tale, confronting dance, theatre and film, Puur puts on stage a small isolated community in a post-catastrophe world. As in ancient myths, something terrible has happened. On stage the impact on bodies and minds of the dacers/actors remains. As if in a dream, it is the dead who speak ... ." If you'd like to visit Puur, have a look at its tourschedule.

  • 26-08-2005:
  • Since the seventies Rockpalast has been the number one show for live music on German television. 16 Horsepower was featured twice. As part of the 1996 Rockpalast festival in Essen and the 1997 open-air festival at the Loreley amphitheatre on the banks of the Rhine. Now it's Woven Hand's turn.

On 18 October 2005 Woven Hand plays the Bonn Harmonie (confirmed), together with Norwegian band Helldorado. Rockpalast will film the show for their Crossroads series and will broadcast it on WDR and 3sat approximately 3 months later. With reruns to come on those two stations and digital channel EinsFestival. Rockpalast will not only shoot the concert, but an interview too.

And that's where you come in. The Rockpalast interviewer has asked us to ask you what you would like to ask David Eugene Edwards. (Confused? :-) If you have questions you always wanted to ask and that you think are interesting for the Rockpalast viewers, mail them to tyfc@16horsepower.com, please before 22 September 2005. And of course we'll keep you updated and informed about the broadcast and the outcome of the interview.

  • 06-08-2005:
  • In 2001, in the very first annual poll, 16 Horsepower was voted Colorado's best underground band by a Denver Post panel of 25 local music experts. The other nine acts in that year's top 10 were Apples in Stereo, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Down-n-Outs, Maraca Five-0, DeVotchKa, The Czars, Dressy Bessy, Acrobat Down and Munly. Here is the top 10 from this year's survey:

In the words of one of the panellists: "David's unrestrained passion and dark intensity is a fitting backdrop for the praise-and-glory Christianity he sings of with Woven Hand. This guy can sing about unbuttered toast and still have my undivided attention."

  • 31-07-2005:
  • Blush, the motion picture, premièred at De Nachten festival in January of this year. This Tuesday, 2 August 2005, the movie of the dance production, is shown on the small screen. Canvas, the 2nd channel of the Flemish public broadcasting corporation, will show the 55-minute movie at 23.45 CET, as the second instalment of a dance trilogy featuring "the big three." The big three being the most important Flemish or Belgian choreographers; Vandekeybus, Fabre and De Keersmaeker.

“Blush is a dance and film version of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, a story of desire, the power of attraction, confrontation and repulsion. Blush investigates the nether world of the subconscious. A fantastic realm where instincts clash and the body does things the mind cannot comprehend. The images take us from beautiful Corsican landscapes to the grimiest neighbourhoods of Brussels." So the TV-guide says.

  • 13-05-2005:
  • David Eugene Edwards responds to some of the comments about the latest Woven Hand tour:

    dear all,

i think it was 1989 or so that jeffrey paul and i began as the denver gentlemen. it was just the two of us. mainly, i played guitar and accordion, while jp played fiddle and did most of the singing. a few people liked it-the majority did not. we continued on...

gradually we acquired more fans but it was always a slow process. we added two other members on various instruments. some liked it while others preferred it just the two of us. we continued on...

next, we added jean-yves tola on drums. some were happy about it as we were, while others were unhappy-it was too rock with the drums and they liked it more traditional as before. we continued on...

the band broke up- i started 16 horsepower with jean-yves and a long time friend keven soll. i was now the singer. many fans of the denver gentlemen were unhappy. to them my words were lame as well as my voice. but all was well for them-the denver gentlemen in time started again and continue today under various line-ups-(jeffrey paul remains (in my opinion),one of the best songsmiths the world has to offer).

16 horsepower was much too rock and roll for the majority of the fans i had acquired up to that point. we would have to begin again-we did so and continued on...

in time our musical relationship with keven failed and we added pascal humbert on bass. once again, many were upset by this and we lost fans--we continued on...

16 horsepower is done- we are still good friends and i pray it remains that way till death do us part. all this to say-the objections of fans and the loss of them is now and has always been for me---- business as usual. i continue on..........

yes, some shows are better than others and believe me when i say that i do not expect your praise nor do i deserve it ever. ordy garrison and peter van laerhoven are friends whom i love dearly. i love to play with them and consider myself lucky to be able to do so.

    sincerely,
    david eugene

  • 11-05-2005:
  • David Eugene Edwards back at Twist and Shout. This time obviously not with 16 Horsepower but with Woven Hand. On Friday May 13th at 7 PM, Woven Hand will do an in-store appearance at Twist and Shout's main store on 300 E Alameda Ave in Denver. The Woven Hand show is the after-party following a visit from the Alliance of Independent Media Stores (AIMS) to Twist and Shout. And the AIMS (a 30-store group of independently owned US record shop) is in town because of their first annual convention in nearby Boulder.
  • As announced a few months ago, during this summer Woven Hand will visit Hungary to perform at the Sziget Festival in Budapest. Plans to extend the tour to other Eastern European countries, such as Slovenia and the Czech Republic are in the making. And who knows, maybe they could visit Latvia and Georgia ... why else was Bush doing a promotion tour for? ;-) Also don't be surprised when more North American dates will be announced in addition to the Illinois shows.

  • 06-05-2005:
  • David Eugene Edwards is involved in yet another Ultima Vez production, titled Puur (Pure). "A production inspired by old myths and the murder of innocent people. Wim VandeKeybus narrates about power-struggles, the unbearable pain of meaningless murder and the fear of the unknown."

Puur premières in Singapore on 27 May 2005 and after a stopover in Seoul the production travels through Europe until April 2006 when the tour ends at the Royal Flemish Theatre in Brussels. (Go to the Ultima Vez site for the complete and up-to-date itinerary.) In Puur, Wim Vandekeybus tries to integrate film and dance. Dancers react to the images. On stage and on screen. Edwards' music is featured in Puur and Edwards features in the film. He plays a social outcast and musician, and his spoken lines are in the -let's call it- "Russian" we know from live shows.

  • For those of you who were disappointed by the 16HP DVD, and there are quite a few of you, there's good news. There's a fair chance that a "real 16hp live DVD" will see the light of day. Glitterhouse and the band will do their utmost.

  • 04-05-2005:
  • On July 1st "Woven Hand featuring David Eugene Edwards of 16 Horsepower" (the name keeps getting longer) plays Schuba's Tavern in Chicago, IL (USA).
  • Blush, the film, will be screened twice on May 14th at the Cannes film festival. Other screenings of the Vandekeybus movie in the upcoming months take place in Columbia (at the Bogotá Museum of Modern Art), Germany (Wolfsburg Cinema 8/70), France (Festival de Moyen Métrage de Brives), Brazil (Rio de Janeiro Festival Dança em Pauto), the United Kingdom (Brighton IMZ Dance Screen), Austria (Salzburg Sommerszene) and Belgium (Antwerp Cartoon's). For more screenshots, look for the link.
  • G. Brown, former music journalist for the Denver Post, released a 16-years-in-the-making, photo-filled encyclopedia of local rock history "Colorado Rocks! A Half-Century of Music in Colorado" . "Not to sound disparaging, but I wanted this to be a bathroom book, where you could pick it up and read it in easily digestible chunks," says Brown, who currently became music director at Denver's KCUV (1510 AM).

Brown's book, published by Boulder County's Pruett Publishing Company, offers a chronological account of rock's significant happenings in Colorado, both in terms of the acts this state birthed - Zephyr, Otis Taylor, Firefall, Big Head Todd & the Monsters, 16 Horsepower and the String Cheese Incident - and the famous faces that passed through, from Jimi Hendrix to Stephen Stills.
