  • On Friday the 27th of April 16hp will be playing at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colorado. The support-act for that show will be a band who more or less owns this theatre, DeVotchKa. Part of the band are members from the former (Jay) Munly De Dar He, plus two of them are acquired for the new line-up of the Denver Gentlemen.
Their music as described by Paul, the clarinet player: "The band is a mix of gypsy improv, mariachi, klezmer, surf rock, tango, Johnny cash, trip hop, and film noir ... sort of a mix between Nick Uratas (the singer) Cicero folk/punk rock background and my classicly trainded avant-garde Kafkaesque film score arranging."
If you want to have a little prelisten of their music, you can visit their website.

    More TV-broadcast news:

    • For 'Splinters', the second single of 16hp's Secret South album, they made a video with atmospheric black and white shots from old houses in abandonded locations and live shots from i.e. Pinkpop 2000. This video can be watched on a Dutch music television station, called TMF.

    18-04-2001:

  • In the May 2001 issue of British magazine Uncut, you can find a very short review of the Hoarse CD. Moreover, this month's Uncut-CD 'Uncut's 17-Track Guide to The Month's best Music' includes a Hoarse track: "Day of the Lords". This is Uncut's description why they chose that song:

"Denver's 16 Horsepower specialise in brooding tales of damnation and hellfire and mainman David Eugene Edwards is a songwriter of apocalyptic intensity. His band's new live album features eight of his own compositions, but the record is enhanced by three well-chosen covers - Creedence's 'Bad Moon Rising', Gun Club's 'Fire Spirit' and this chillingly eerie rendition of 'Day of the Lord' from Joy Division's 1979 debut, Unknown Pleasures."

  • In another British magazine, the New Musical Express of 14 April 2001, the London Dingwalls-show of 29 March 2001 is reviewed.

  • 06-04-2001:

  • Denver magazine Westword handed out a couple of awards for the year 2001. One is for 'the best recording' and it goes out to Secret South - 16 Horsepower:

"Secret South proves that 16 Horsepower has survived the hurdles of record label fallout (the band has signed with Razor & Tie) and shifting membership with its creative faculties not only intact, but heightened: This swirling mass of music, informed by the skewed American traditionalism of David Eugene Edwards, his bandmates and local production ace Bob Ferbrache, is an emotional, often ominous trek that beckons the careful listener to find the calm within the storm. Banjo pluckings crouch behind walls of distortion; plaintive readings of American railway standards morph into discordance. It's a brilliant work, one that music lovers should be proud to regard as a hometown export."

  • 30-03-2001:
Shows of the European spring tour filmed by tv:

Important information: 'mmeuhh' is the sound a Belgian horse makes. Evidently, Mr.Tola was asked about his love for horses.
Humo gives away 30 tickets if you call 0900-28883 before 23/2/01. But this number can only be dialed from Belgium.

(Go here for all 2001 tourdates)
  • You can already pre-order Hoarse from Checkered Past's (online) store. If you do, they throw in a free 16hp poster. Hoarse, pre-ordered, will be available mid-April. It'll hit the stores regularly in May.
  • 03-03-2001:

  • On 7 March 2001, WXPN, the non-commercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, will broadcast a 16hp session. The band will perform songs from Secret South on the World Cafe show. Those in the US not living in the Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Allentown (PA) areas can check here to find out which other stations also relay the World Cafe show.
  • From Glitterhouse. Because the band categorically wanted a regular US release for Hoarse (on Checkered Past, May 2001) their German label will release it regularly too (for "import-reasons"). They add that the regular release will be a jewel-box version. If you want the digi-pack, you still have to mail-order it from Glitterhouse.
  • Also only available by mail-order from Glitterhouse; the Out Of The Blue compilation series. Opening track on the latest issue (Volume 9, only DM 7,-) is Loveless Road by Pascal Humbert's Lilium.
