Woven Hand - Mosaic review

By Benoît Richard
from French website Benzine, July 2006

Consider the Birds, Woven Hand's previous album, had been, at the time (2004), like a little bomb of musical and emotional power, and had us hope for a more than promising post-16HP future: David Eugene Edwards, a very inspired musician was then free to develop his ability to produce the most beautiful surges that mystical folk music had to offer.

On his third album, D.E.E. proudly grabs his pilgrim's staff again and continues the work he started on his first two albums. Mosaic is not as dark, thus probably not as tormented as Consider the Birds; however, it does explore the same perspectives and the same medieval atmosphere, once more enhanced by violins, tambourines and pipes.

And yet, despite this very personal touch, magic doesn't really happen, and we're still expecting songs that would make us unanimously bow to this mystical folk-singer's genius. The album is not actually bad, but it just doesn't startle or strike the listener with the climax of emotions that swept through the previous 2 albums. This lack of spark can be felt throughout Mosaic, and prompts us to dive back into the wonderful depths of Consider the Birds, Woven Hand's absolute masterpiece.
