Nighttown, Rotterdam (NL),
13 July 1998
I've seen what I saw ... *sigh*
July 13,1998.
Around half past eight we entered Nighttown, amazed by the anticipating crowd, gathered already in front of the
stage. This was obviously not for the quite unknown support-act 'Cradle', which
sometimes sounded a bit like the Smashing Pumpkins.
Around 10:00, when Nighttown was totally packed, Jean-Yves, Pascal and
Steve were followed by a guy with "his black hair shined at me from the
depths of his hair of deepest black" (yet it wasn't mister Cave).
From the first tune of 'American Wheeze' until the last tune of Joy
Division's 'Day of the Lords', they were again breath-taking. Everything
came close to perfection.
The setting was more or less the same as at Paradiso (last May), but the
songs were performed differently. A surprising rendering of 'Phyllis Ruth',
especially by Jean-Yves who was using some drumsticks with balls on the end (beats me how they are called ;-), which gave it a real
dark and mystical sound (a bit of a Budgie-ish sound ... ) Another
highlight was 'Horse Head', a total new and fresh interpretation of the
song. The overall mix of the whole concert was very solid and well balanced.
The audience screamed their lungs out for an encore, before they even left
the stage. David hesitated to go off stage, since he already made up his
mind to play again for this enthusiastic crowd.
They played for about one and a half hour.
All in all: Agaian a great concert!
