Pukkelpop Festival
Interview by NB - Picture by Marco Mertens
"If, out of all these new bands, you could choose only one?" Feeder, replied Pukkelpop organizer Chokri Mabassine resolutely. Because of that we were in the Dance Hall on Saturday morning at a quarter past eleven, to mark the talent spotter in Chokri. But really, nine out of ten. "They don't even transcend their examples", someone, who was amazed at our haste, had pointed out to us that morning. Yes o.k., we heard Filter, Smashing Pumpkins and melodic grunge, but above all things, we heard Sweet 16 and Descend, songs of a level that we hadn't expected the rest of the day. Add to that the trio's bright orange overalls and you can understand that Feeder succeeded in doing what a large number of bands did not achieve on Saturday: get imprinted in our memories. Only five bands later someone would again achieve that. And we may consider ourselves lucky that we hadn't been guided by the presenter Chantal Pattyn. She warned us against "Flemish fair and stables" during 16 Horsepower. We stayed and found a threesome with drums and double bass. We saw a dye blond singer sitting on a stool who put a bandoneon, a banjo and a guitar on his knee and heard strange music: a bit intimate, a bit country, a bit biblical, a bit very beautiful. |
