Woven Hand, 013

34-year-old David Eugene Edwards is the pivot of the irresistible country/folk/bluesquartet 16 Horsepower. Due to his high productivity he brought the side-project Woven Hand into existence for his more intimate songs. This band too effortlessly sells out 013' s small hall. Resulting in 400 visitors with a strained neck. They had better closed their eyes and just listened to the four musicians, seated on a very low stage. Because there was a lot to be enjoyed.

Just take Edwards' voice. Usually distorted by a creaking microphone, but still. Other than sometimes in 16 Horsepower, his vocals are not overdone and the passion comes across even better when he's singing modestly. Woven Hand also contains more folk than the mother ship, whereas the characterizing squeezebox is missing. (Pump)organ, ukulele, mandolin, guitar, drums and cello, in varying combinations, form the right backdrop for the just not too depressing lyrics of Edwards who was decked out with a drooping moustache on this occasion.

Even the cover of Bill Withers' Ain't No Sunshine live has the power that it lacks on the album. In the solo songs (among which the encores) Edwards briefly draws upon his not so positive 16 Horsepower material (`Every man is evil/every man is a liarī) and the Lord Jesus gets a lift in his dusty stagecoach. Yes, it does run deep, but well, it is the day of the Lord in Tilburg after all. Dear me, what a passion, intensity, feeling and personality.
